Collection: Reinata Sadimba
Born 1945 in the largest town of the Mueda Plateau (Mozambique), Reinata Sadimba learned the long-standing Makonde tradition of producing terracotta figures, a type of work customarily undertaken by men. The 1970s signaled an aesthetic shift for Sadimba, whereupon a profound transformation in style emerged. The ‘strange and fantastic’ forms of this shift opened her work out to a wider audience and formed the core of her approach for years to follow. This period was followed by a forced exile in Tanzania between 1980 to 1992, that while adverse, proved a productive period for her artistry.
Sadimba has received numerous awards and has held exhibitions in several countries, including Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Denmark, Italy, South Africa and Tanzania. Recent exhibitions include Centro Cultural Brasil Moçambique (CCBM), Maputo (2017). Her work is further held in major collections such as the National Museum of Mozambique, Maputo; Museu Nacional de Etnologia, Lisbon and Culturgest, Lisbon, among others.
